About F. M. Alexander

Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955) was an Australian actor who suffered from a case of chronic hoarseness that threatened to ruin his career.  Since doctors were unable to help him, he took matters into his own hands and began to examine how he was using his body while reciting.  He noticed that when he spoke, he interfered with the natural balance of his head, neck, and torso, and this pattern created excessive tension and compression throughout his whole body.  Alexander also noticed that he used his body like this all the time throughout all of his daily activities but to a lesser degree.  In other words, tightening his neck and torso were habits.  After many years of meticulous self-observation and experimentation, Alexander not only restored his voice by changing the way he was using his body, but he evolved a method that is now taught throughout the world, profoundly changing peoples’ lives.
